| Series: Transforming Social Work Practice |
The world of social work and social care is evolving rapidly and the knowledge and skills needed to practise must keep pace with these changes. Councils with Social Services Responsibilities (the new term for social services departments) separate their service into children and young people and adult branches, and whilst many social workers remain employed within local authorities, there is an increasing number of social work and social care employees in a range of private, independent and voluntary sector agencies. It is this context which the Transforming Social Work Practice series effectively addresses, recognising the multi-agency and multidisciplinary focus of contemporary practice, whilst ensuring the requirements for qualification and the National Occupational Standards are met.

Greta Bradley is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of York, where she teaches community care and research methods. She has practice and management experience in the statutory sector.
